Safety
Students should be able to feel safe on campus, at home and across Greater Manchester, whatever the time of day or year.
GMSP are working with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and students’ unions to improve student safety across the whole city-region.
The Challenge
Safety concerns can shape how students experience university, whether that’s when travelling to and from campus, working late shifts, enjoying nights out or living in shared accommodation.
As more students rely on working alongside their studies, increasing numbers are being employed in the night-time economy. This can create additional safety considerations, particularly for women and marginalised genders.
What we want
We want Greater Manchester to be a place where every student feels safe and supported.
This includes improving access to safe transport, promoting safe working practices for student staff and ensuring students feel secure both on campus and in the neighbourhoods they call home.
What we’re doing
We are focusing on three areas that have a significant impact on student safety:
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Reclaim the Night march to end gender-based violence, and we’re collaborating with students’ unions across Greater Manchester to support and promote the march’s ongoing legacy.
We want students to shape conversations around transport safety, and are working closely with TfGM to improve awareness of safety initiatives such as the TravelSafe app.
Alongside our engagement with the Good Employment Charter, we’re also advocating for employers to consider initiatives that guarantee a safe journey home for all staff.
